  • Artwork Description

    Two figures move through an expanse of pale grey and white - a father and his young son, skis over their shoulders, heading back through the quiet of the mountains. The background barely reveals itself: faint outlines of peaks dissolved in mist, the suggestion of a fading afternoon. A touch of muted colour on their clothing is all that marks them out from the stillness around them. Nothing is sharp or defined. The painting feels like memory - soft, warm, honest, and already beginning to blur at the edges.

  • Artist's Insight

    This came from a day skiing with my son in La Tour, in the Chamonix valley. I didn't want the mountains to be the subject. I wanted the painting to feel like a memory - not sharp and detailed, but soft, honest, and unhurried. The focus is on the relationship: the companionship of finishing a great day together, side by side, with nothing needing to be said.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
