  • Artwork Description

    Two figures share a chairlift marked 007, suspended in falling snow against layered tones of blue and muted violet. They lean slightly to one side, the chair rocking gently with their closeness. The backdrop of snow-covered peaks dissolves into haze, giving the scene a floating, suspended quality - as though the mountain itself has briefly stepped back to allow the moment to happen. The painting was originally commissioned to mark a real marriage proposal made, mid-air, on this very chairlift.

  • Artist's Insight

    This was commissioned after a gentleman proposed to his fiancée on a chairlift. But it became something more open than a portrait - a painting about any two people sharing a moment somewhere above the snow, with nothing to do but be there. The number 007 wasn't chosen by chance. There's always a little licence in a good story.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
