A tribute to one of Britain’s greatest sporting achievements, 1981 Konrad Bartelski captures the legendary downhill skier at the moment of his most iconic performance. This intimate portrait by Johny Midnight celebrates focus, grit, and a milestone that changed British skiing forever.
Artwork Description
In "1981 Konrad Bartelski", Johnny Midnight paints the intensity of a world-class athlete at the peak of his career. The composition centres on Bartelski’s gaze - sharp, determined, and reflective - moments after completing what would become one of Britain’s most celebrated downhill runs. Midnight uses a striking combination of cool greys, icy blues, and bold reds to evoke the high-altitude world of alpine racing.
The textured background suggests swirling snow and speed, while the close framing and crisp detail of the ski goggles, race helmet, and ARC skis place the viewer right beside the athlete on the slopes of Val Gardena. The painting balances realism with expressive brushwork, honouring both the physical courage and emotional depth of elite competition.
Artist Insight
Johny Midnight writes:
“I wanted to capture the intense look that only comes from completing your best ever run, missing the world title by just 0.11 seconds.
Konrad Bartelski himself saw the painting, recognised the expression instantly, and gave it his thumbs-up of approval. This work honours not only his 1981 World Cup podium finish - still the greatest British result in men’s downhill - but also his later life as a renowned mountain photographer and adventurer.
