Gallery Midnight
3 O'Clock, London
3 O'Clock, London
by Johny Midnight
A snapshot of central London in mixed media - the tube map scrawled across the sky in thick, bright lines, a frieze of sketched Londoners walking above it, and the city's landmarks rising through the colour below.

Artwork Description
The canvas works in layers. Across the top runs a single line of figures in loose grey sketch - walkers, cyclists, a dog, a couple hand in hand. Beneath them the Underground network is laid down in thick, almost childlike strokes of red, yellow, green, blue and black. Through and around it rise Big Ben, St Paul's, the London Eye, the Shard, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, some drawn in fine black line, others painted solid. Washes of pink, lilac and pale blue hold the city together, with a red phone box anchoring the lower corner.

Artist's Insight
With the gallery open seven days a week I don't get up to town much, but the other day I did, and I came back inspired by everything going on. This is my snapshot. I kept asking what makes London, London. The row along the top is the walk of life - people on bikes, with their dogs, shopping, holding hands. I painted the tube map almost the way a child would, because it is such a simple, brilliant design that cities everywhere borrowed it. Then the landmarks, with a few people in between. Mixed styles for a mixed-up city.
