Gallery Midnight

36 Hours

36 Hours

by Johny Midnight

Shackleton, Worsley and Crean cross the unmapped interior of South Georgia - roped together, frostbitten, pressing through fog and storm. No one had crossed this island before. No one has since.

  • Artwork Description

Three figures, roped together, press through fog and driving snow across the unmapped interior of South Georgia. Rendered almost monochromatically in greys, whites and faint hints of khaki, they are indistinct yet unmistakable in their determination - faces gnarled with frostbite, eyes set forward. The landscape is inhuman in scale: a sweep of white and grey, empty and merciless. The palette of turquoises, blues and cold whites creates both physical sensation and psychological weight. This is the 36-hour crossing - never attempted before, never repeated since - that made the rescue of the Endurance's crew possible.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted to paint not just the event, but the emotion - the isolation, the fear, and the incredible courage that carried them through. Shackleton, Tom Crean, and Worsley. Thirty-six hours crossing an island no one had ever traversed, through bitter cold, fog and storms. The men are painted in near-monochrome because the landscape offered them no colour, no warmth, no comfort. The frostbite on their faces, the torn clothing, the frozen moustaches - and still they moved forward. That tenacity is what this painting is about.
