  • Artwork Description

At 5:30 on an autumn evening, Balham Station becomes a convergence of city stories. Long shadows stretch behind commuters as low sunlight falls across the pink and grey pavements. The Underground roundel glows against the station façade, caught in a wide band of creamy golden light rendered in broad, expressive brushstrokes. Across the building, softer purples and greys tell the other side of the hour. Children on scooters, dogs tugging leads, cyclists at the lights, shoppers and school kids all move through the crossroads together. The railway bridge divides the pastel patchwork sky from the street below, grounding the scene in recognisable South London architecture. Modern impressionist in feeling, the painting conveys not just the image but the sensory experience of the evening commute.

  • Artist's Insight

It's 5:30 on an autumn evening at the crossroads of Balham Station. The sun creates long shadows on the pink and grey pavements - dogs, scooters, kids, shoppers - it's a modern-day snapshot of South London. I use light as the central storytelling tool here: the station is bathed in warmth while the rest of the city shifts into cooler tones. That contrast is the painting - the fleeting magic of dusk in an urban landscape, the moment a neighbourhood transitions from day to night.
