50 Shades

50 Shades

by Johny Midnight

A surrealist architectural world of impossible staircases and geometric planes, populated by dozens of black silhouetted figures. Escher, Picasso and Mondrian collide in one intricate, layered and endlessly rewarding canvas.

  • Artwork Description

Dozens of black silhouetted figures inhabit an impossible geometric world - climbing staircases that lead nowhere, balancing on architectural planes, reclining across intersecting surfaces. The composition draws on Escher's impossible structures, Picasso's fractured forms and Mondrian's geometric rigour, but the result is entirely Johny's own. Touches of pink, blue, red and teal punctuate an otherwise graphic black-and-white world. The figures are ambiguous - playful, sensual, or simply human, depending on where your eye lands. A painting that rewards extended looking.

  • Artist's Insight

This is a surrealist painting with a theme perhaps close to Escher - you don't know if you're going up the steps or down. It's designed to make you wonder exactly what you're looking at. The characters could be, if you choose, a little saucy. It has elements of Picasso and Mondrian throughout. I liked the idea of a world where gravity and logic have been suspended and people just go about their business regardless.
