A Couple of Pitons

A Couple of Pitons

by Johny Midnight

The Pitons of St Lucia from a viewpoint that required a journey across the island. Translucent greens, extraordinary tropical flora in the foreground, two volcanic peaks jutting from the earth. Lush, vivid, and immediately recognisable.

  • Artwork Description

Part of Johny's Caribbean collection painted during a year living on St Lucia, this work depicts the iconic Pitons from a viewpoint that required a journey from one side of the island to the other. The two volcanic peaks dominate the mid-ground, their surfaces painted in translucent layers of green that capture the lush, dense vegetation covering the rock faces. The foreground is extraordinary - a riot of tropical colour depicting the fauna of a Caribbean island in full vitality: flowering plants, vivid foliage, and the layered richness of the jungle floor. The painting is recognisably the Pitons, but the translucent, abstract approach to colour gives it an otherworldly, almost hallucinatory quality.

  • Artist's Insight

I travelled across the island specifically to paint this view. The Pitons are a landmark, but getting to this particular angle took effort - and that effort is reflected in the painting. I was drawn to the contrast between the grandeur of the volcanic peaks and the extraordinary abundance of colour and life at their feet. The translucent paint application was deliberate: I wanted the green of the mountains to feel like light coming through leaves rather than solid rock, capturing the way Caribbean vegetation seems to glow. The foreground wildflowers and jungle growth were painted with energy and joy - the natural colour of St Lucia is something you genuinely cannot over-saturate.
