  • Artwork Description

    Four figures negotiate a misty grey slope in a scene of cheerful, good-natured chaos. A mother leans forward, hauling her young son up by her ski pole as he grips on with full determination. Nearby, a father carries his daughter on his shoulders, her tiny skis attached to his rucksack. Snow-laden firs soften the background, and snowflakes cross the foreground light. Bright jackets and helmets cut through the muted winter palette with warmth and personality. The painting captures what family skiing is actually like: not graceful, not composed, and entirely worth it.

  • Artist's Insight

    I painted this in 2015 after watching families on the slopes around Chamonix - the falls, the hauling up, the patient parents. Skiing has always been about more than the runs for me. It's the small shared moments - helping hands, small triumphs, the negotiation between what children want to do and what parents need them to do.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
