  • Artwork Description

    The Endurance looms in the background of this haunting canvas, masts and rigging encased in ice, her dark hull tilting under the frozen sea's grip. In the foreground, figures move through a near-monochrome landscape of grey and sepia, setting up the makeshift camp that will become their home. Shards of turquoise fracture the ice underfoot. Above, the sky swirls in abstracted purples, greys and blues - at once desolate and strangely luminous. Midnight fuses documentary instinct with emotional expression, capturing the moment hope itself was frozen.

  • Artist's Insight

    This piece represents the moment when hope was frozen - literally and emotionally. The ship is dying, yet the men endure. I wanted the colours to feel both cold and strangely beautiful, a reminder that courage often lives in the bleakest places. The rigging, stiff with ice, the dark hull - I wanted the boat to feel like it was already gone, even as the men went about the business of surviving beside her.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
