  • Artwork Description

Set along Ritherdon Road in South London, this painting captures the gentle ritual of a spring morning outside Dee Light Bakery. Blossom trees arch overhead in loose sweeps of pink and white, softening the red-brick terrace behind. Figures settle at pavement tables, step inside mid-conversation or drift past carrying coffees and baguettes. Light floods in from the south, casting elongated shadows across the pavement and illuminating tabletops in flashes of white and warm ochre. Painted in a loose fusion of abstraction and impressionism, edges dissolve and colours spill into one another, capturing the transient warmth of a neighbourhood coming to life.

  • Artist's Insight

I keep coming back to the small rituals that define a place. This painting is about Ritherdon Road during early spring, when the blossom is out and the light does something quite special from the south side of the road. The Dee Light Bakery is right next to the gallery, so this scene is part of my daily life. I wanted to paint the feeling of the morning rather than describe it precisely - the looseness in the brushwork reflects how quickly these moments pass. A few conversations, a coffee, and suddenly the morning has gone.
