Aiguille Blue
Aiguille Blue
by Johny Midnight
The Aiguille du Midi with the sky split in two - deep navy and teal on one side, turquoise on the other. Oil and acrylic resist each other to create fractured, ice-like textures. Abstract, unapologetic, and entirely itself.
Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

Artwork Description
This abstract work depicts the Aiguille du Midi, at 3,850 metres the highest skiable cable car in the world and gateway to the Vallee Blanche. The sky is split decisively down the canvas - deep, saturated navy and teal on the left, a lighter turquoise on the right - with the mountain rising between the two halves as the single focal point. The peak is recognisable in silhouette even through the abstraction, its distinctive needle form unmistakeable. Oil and acrylic applied in combination create the complex surface textures across the painting, the two materials resisting each other to produce fractures, bubbles, and ice-like patterns that feel more honest to glacial surfaces than any conventional brushwork. The colour across the mountain forms shifts between dark and light, suggesting the way light moves across exposed rock and ice at extreme altitude.

Artist's Insight
To me, the Aiguille du Midi has always looked slightly ridiculous - an impossibly sharp spike with a telecom mast on top, like an upside-down ice cream cone. But ridiculous or not, it is one of the most impressive mountain peaks in the entire Alps. This version keeps it simple: split sky, strong silhouette, ice floe textures. The combination of oil and acrylic is something I return to specifically when I want to depict glacial or icy surfaces - the way they resist each other and then fracture as they dry is more honest to ice than anything a brush can produce alone.
