  • Artwork Description

    This painting depicts the Aiguille du Midi from the Chamonix Valley, the peak rising to 3,850 metres. The background, sky, and surrounding mountain forms are all rendered in the characteristic tonal range known locally as Chamonix grey - layered, atmospheric, and cool. From that restrained base, the mountain itself is lifted with various pastel colours: soft pinks, peaches, and magentas suggesting warm light catching the upper faces, contrasting with Prussian blue and black in the shadow areas. Brilliant whites pick out the highest highlights where snow catches direct light. Mont Blanc is visible but deliberately subtle in the background - hinted at rather than stated, adding depth without competing with the central peak.

  • Artist's Insight

    I painted the Aiguille du Midi many times while living in the Chamonix Valley, and each time I approached it differently. There is something about the way it hangs over the valley - present at every turn, in every weather - that keeps demanding new responses. This version is called Mystique because that is exactly what the mountain is. It sits up there above the valley and it does not explain itself. It is just there. Some days it is clear and sharp and almost friendly. Other days it vanishes entirely into cloud. This painting is about the in-between - that Chamonix grey atmosphere where the mountain is visible but somehow still elusive.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
