Aim for the Blue - Part 1

Aim for the Blue - Part 1

by Johny Midnight

A single sailing boat pushes toward stormy grey weather, with just a touch of turquoise sky at the lower right corner. Part one of a diptych - the two paintings hang together, their horizons perfectly aligned.

  • Artwork Description

Grey curtains of palette-knife sky dominate this seascape, descending heavily from above as a single sailboat presses on beneath them. The treatment of the sky is deliberately flat and weighted - wide, soft strokes applied with a palette knife, creating a sense of closing-in atmosphere. At the lower right corner, a sliver of turquoise offers the only relief. That detail gives the painting its title and its direction: blue sky is ahead, if you can reach it. This canvas is designed to hang alongside its companion, Part 2, with both horizons meeting seamlessly.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted the feeling of a boat sailing into bad weather, with just enough blue in the corner to give you hope. The sky is painted almost entirely with a palette knife in flat, heavy strokes - like curtains being drawn across. You want to get out from under them and into the clear blue. I painted it as part of a diptych. The two horizons match exactly, so when they're hung together they read as one painting. The turquoise in the corner is the reason you keep sailing.
