  • Artwork Description

    Three figures lie entwined in a darkened bedroom - two adults and a small infant curled between them, all deeply asleep. The bed dominates the canvas, its textured covers rendered in abstract whites, purples and greys. A white cat sits sentinel on the windowsill, framed by a teal-lit window. The room beyond is deep blue and black, a picture on the wall barely visible. Johny's palette of warm ochres for the skin against the cool dark room creates an atmosphere of profound quiet - a moment of hard-won, absolute peace.

  • Artist's Insight

    This painting depicts that moment when a couple have their first child. They lie in bed, all three together. It's about sleeping, peacefulness and harmony. Every new parent knows that feeling - total exhaustion, but also the most complete happiness. The white cat on the windowsill is just watching over them. I painted it in an abstract but understandable manner - you feel the warmth and the stillness rather than see every detail.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
