  • Artwork Description

    The dovecote sits at the top of the hill above Bruton, presiding over a landscape locked in cold. The foreground field is white with frost, the grass barely visible beneath it. The sky carries that particular winter palette - grey-blues softening into pink at the horizon - that makes everything feel suspended and still. On the right, trees hold the last of their autumn leaves, catching a low, warm light that barely reaches the ground. Long shadows stretch across the canvas, marking the sun's slow retreat. It is a painting about quiet - the specific, held quality of a Somerset winter morning.

  • Artist's Insight

    I was drawn to the dovecote in that particular light because it felt almost spectral - just visible, barely warm, the whole scene teetering between day and night. I wanted the palette to feel restrained, close to a charcoal study, but with just enough colour to keep it breathing. The frost in the foreground was the key to the whole thing - once that was in, the calm arrived.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
