  • Artwork Description

The foreground is washed in cool whites and silvery tones, suggesting frost settled across the open ground. Two children move side by side, their forms dark against the luminous surface, seemingly mid-conversation. Beyond them, figures and dog walkers appear as soft silhouettes scattered across the landscape. The background dissolves into purples, greys and blush tones, hinting at an early sunrise filtering through mist and autumn foliage. Brushwork is expressive and layered - textures built into the surface rather than defined at the edge. Trees glow faintly with warm rust and rose, contrasting with the cool frost below. The result is atmospheric rather than literal: a memory of a morning, felt rather than described.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted to paint the atmosphere of a frosty morning on the Common - that quality of light where everything is slightly blurred and the ground seems to glow. Figures become silhouettes in conditions like that. You lose the individual and gain the collective - all these shapes moving through white space. I reduced the colour palette deliberately: the frost does the work of simplifying the world, and I followed that lead. The warm tones in the trees are the only thing pushing back against the cold. It's a painting about transition - autumn becoming winter, darkness becoming light.
