  • Artwork Description

    A wide expanse of near-still water fills the foreground, painted loosely and reflectively, beneath a line of brightly coloured changing cabins - yellow, blue, red and green - at the water's edge. Behind them, autumn trees sit soft and monotone under a hazy sun with a low, gentle glow. The cabins and their reflections provide the only strong colour, punctuating an atmospheric, muted scene. It captures the particular calm of a large body of water on an autumn morning.

  • Artist's Insight

    The idea was to give you the feeling and atmosphere of a great expanse of water on an autumn morning - soft, monotone, the trees hazy and the sun popping up with a gentle glow. The changing cabins had to be brightly coloured and, importantly, in the right order, or I would upset the people who swim there through the winter. The foreground I painted more abstractly than the cabins. It is one of the most popular lido pictures in the gallery.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham.
