  • Artwork Description

This painting captures Tooting Bec Lido in the full drama of a sunrise, the sky moving through reds and pinks in layered abstract marks while the treeline holds a more grounded realism behind the cabins. The iconic coloured doors stretch along the water's edge, their reds, yellows, blues and greens reflected vividly in the turquoise pool below. Textured brushwork builds the atmosphere throughout - the sky loose and expressive, the water shimmering with the movement of light rather than the stillness of early morning. The composition balances architectural rhythm with the fluidity of reflection, creating a painting that is at once observational and exuberant.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted this painting to feel like a full-on colour overload - the kind that invites you to take a swim, even if you know the water isn't heated and you'll need real courage to get in. A spring sunrise over the lido offered exactly that energy. The cabin doors are always what draw me back to this subject: that row of colour reflected in the water is one of the best things in South London. I used reflection and abstraction to amplify the atmosphere rather than simply describe it. This is a painting about the lido as sensation - exhilarating, vivid and unmistakably local.
