Balloon Dance

Balloon Dance

by Johny Midnight

A wire-line stick figure dances through a field of sponged colour circles, lifted by a single red balloon. Joyful, childlike and completely disarming - a painting that makes a room smile.

  • Artwork Description

A simple black wire figure - drawn with the directness of a child's doodle - rises through a canvas covered in sponge-printed circles of orange, gold, teal, pink and white. A single red balloon pulls the figure upward and forward, its string the only tension in an otherwise weightless composition. The technique began as a children's art class exercise in sponge-printing; the stick figure arrived later, and immediately gave the abstract field its narrative. Playful, immediate and genuinely joyful - a painting for a kitchen, a child's room, or anywhere that needs lightness.

  • Artist's Insight

This started as a demonstration for children - showing them how to use a sponge as a printing tool. I loved the field of colour it created so much that I kept going. Then I added the stick figure holding the red balloon and it all clicked. There's something about the simplicity of a stick figure that everyone responds to - it could be anyone, any age. It's designed to be fun, for a child's room or a funky modern kitchen. Sometimes the most joyful paintings come from the simplest ideas.
