  • Artwork Description

This painting captures the lakeside terrace near the Pear Tree Café in Battersea Park as a warm evening settles across the water. The sky glows in soft pastel oranges and yellows, casting long shadows across cool blue paving. Trees in the background are painted with a Cézanne-inspired structure - layered blues, greens and muted oranges creating depth without rigid detail. A small paddle boat drifts on the lake. In the foreground, families gather at picnic benches. Children feed dogs ice cream. Parents chat, scroll through phones and balance coffee cups. The atmosphere is relaxed but social - the kind of early evening when Londoners unwind collectively, without quite wanting to go home.

  • Artist's Insight

I've always been interested in how people behave when a park starts to empty but nobody quite wants to leave. Battersea Park at dusk has that quality - everyone slowing down, lingering at the tables, the light doing something golden over the lake. The Pear Tree Café is the anchor here, but the painting is really about the people around it. Phones appear, ice cream gets shared with the dog, conversations drift. It's very much London in the present tense. I like paintings that work as time capsules - in fifty years, this is what Battersea Park on a summer evening looked like.
