Big Power 1

Big Power 1

by Johny Midnight

The first in Johny's celebrated Battersea Power Station series, painted in 2011. Cubism, screen printing and impressionism collide in vibrant orange brickwork, soft grey skies and mosaic-like Thames reflections - bold, layered and alive.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

Viewed from across the River Thames, Battersea Power Station emerges in vivid orange brickwork against layered greys, blues and pale pink. The four chimneys catch light in crisp white before falling into mauve and pink shadow. To the left, a historic coal crane quietly references the building's working past. In the foreground, the Thames is rendered with loose impressionistic brushwork combined with mosaic-like abstract reflections - flecks of colour rippling across the surface, echoing the energy and presence of the structure rising above.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted Big Power 1 to feel confident and slightly rebellious - just like Battersea itself. I was fascinated by how three very different styles - cubism for structure, screen printing for punch, impressionism for atmosphere - could collide and become something entirely new. I let them clash until something interesting emerged. The orange brickwork came instinctively. It felt right for a building that has never been quiet about its presence. This painting was about trusting that instinct and seeing where it led.
