Big Power 20

Big Power 20

by Johny Midnight

One of the most abstract works in the collection - Battersea reduced to a powerful impression in bright magentas, reds and flashes of green. Dense black shadows and thrown paint suggest storm, chaos and the raw energy of the building itself.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

Battersea Power Station is reduced to a powerful impression rather than a literal structure. Chimneys and the mass of the building emerge through layers of bright magentas, deep reds and sudden flashes of green, surrounded by heavy blacks and turbulent textures. The background is deliberately chaotic - splashed, thrown and scraped paint suggesting stormy weather and shifting cloud. Shadow areas are dense and dramatic, created with glass paint and dark pigments. The River Thames is only lightly suggested, with fractured reflections broken apart by gesture and colour, the foreground dissolving into abstraction, reinforcing motion, noise and atmosphere.

  • Artist's Insight

This one was about letting go. I wasn't trying to describe the power station - just the feeling of it. Chaos, weather, colour, noise. The glass paint in the shadow areas was a new experiment - it catches light differently, adding a depth and intensity I couldn't get with oil alone. I threw paint, scraped it, let it drip and do whatever it wanted. It's probably the most abstract Battersea painting I've made, but somehow it still feels right. Sometimes the most honest paintings are the ones where control disappears completely.
