Big Power 24

The first Battersea painting to include Battersea Bridge. Autumn light at five in the afternoon catches the station in rich reds and orange, while the Thames glimmers in deep turquoise and grey - subtle, powerful and rooted in place.

  • Artwork Description

Battersea Power Station is painted at the height of autumn light, the structure powerful and solid in rich layers of red and orange that capture the warmth of late afternoon. Battersea Bridge spans the foreground, its arches cutting gently across the River Thames. The water is rendered in deep turquoise, dark blues and muted greys, broken by flashes of orange and red reflection pulled directly from the power station's brickwork. The sky is deliberately restrained - flat greys and beige creating a quiet backdrop that allows the warmth of the building and river to dominate, understated in atmosphere yet undeniably powerful in presence.

  • Artist's Insight

This was the first time I painted Battersea Bridge alongside the power station. I wanted the light to feel very specific - that autumn glow around five in the afternoon, when the sun catches brick at a low angle and everything goes warm and amber. The sky stays calm and flat so the building and reflections can really speak for themselves. Including the bridge was about anchoring the power station in its actual geography - placing it firmly within the Thames, within London, rather than floating in abstraction. It felt like an important moment in the series.
