Black Aiguille
Black Aiguille
by Johny Midnight
The Aiguille du Midi stripped of all pleasantry. Dark charcoals and black, broken by flashes of brilliant white snow in rock fissures. Monolithic and slightly threatening - the mountain on a day when it does not welcome you.
Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

Artwork Description
This abstract alpine work is inspired by the Aiguille du Midi, the iconic needle-like peak rising to 3,900 metres above the Chamonix Valley. Johny paints the mountain almost entirely in dark greys, charcoals, and black, giving it a looming, monolithic presence. These deep tones are sharply contrasted by flashes of brilliant white snow caught in rock fissures, emphasising both scale and danger. The background dissolves into soft blues, greys, and faint pinks - not as scenery, but as atmosphere - allowing the peak to dominate the entire composition. Edges blur, surfaces scrape and fracture, and the mountain feels more felt than seen. Less about geography, more about standing beneath something far bigger than you.

Artist's Insight
I have skied and lived around Chamonix long enough to know that the Aiguille du Midi is not always welcoming. Some days it is luminous and inviting - but most days it is dark, cold, and quietly intimidating. That is the version I prefer to paint. I love stripping mountains back to their personality, and for me the Aiguille is unapologetically dominant - it does not care if you are tired, cold, or scared. It just is. This painting came from that mindset: fewer colours, heavier marks, and a focus on weight and presence rather than beauty. It is me painting the Alps the way they feel at their most honest.
