  • Artwork Description

    Each spring, the cherry blossom around the gallery announces itself with a week of pink and white that transforms the street. This painting draws on that annual miracle and on the Japanese tradition of following the blossom north - the Hanami spirit of pausing for something fleeting and perfect. The tree is stylised, each tiny blossom placed to build the canopy; the background is abstract and richly textured, the blue worked in swirling layers of cerulean, white and aquamarine. Oriental in feeling, intimate in execution.

  • Artist's Insight

    Every year outside the gallery the cherry blossom around March really brings the streets alive. My parents had also visited Japan, where they followed the Blossom Trail. I wanted this painting to have the feel of something Japanese or oriental - stylised in the background, with the tree popping out in a very stylistic manner. Each tiny blossom hopefully placed in the right position, just to create that wonderful time of year where nature takes over. It's a painting about a feeling as much as a tree.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
