Blue Sky Cows

Blue Sky Cows

by Johny Midnight

Two Friesian cows graze a Somerset meadow as the day winds down. The sky is vast and textured - blues, greys, and a touch of magenta catching the last of the summer light.

  • Artwork Description

The painting is dominated by sky - heavily worked, almost pointillist in places, blues and greys building into cloud with a wash of warm magenta where the sun is beginning to drop. Below, a wide meadow stretches back toward a distant treeline, the foreground thick with wildflowers and grass rendered in short, energetic marks of orange, green, and dark. Two Friesian cows stand in the mid-ground going about their business with the unhurried calm of animals that own wherever they happen to be. It is late on a Somerset summer evening, around eight o'clock, and everything is exactly as it should be.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted the sky to do the heavy lifting in this painting - it is almost the whole canvas, and I worked it hard to get that particular quality of late summer light where the blue is still brilliant but the warmth underneath tells you the day is ending. The cows almost place themselves in a painting like this. There is something about Friesians in a Somerset meadow that is just completely right. The meadow foreground came from wanting to get that sense of the natural abundance of a proper old pasture - not a manicured field, but somewhere that has been left to do what it wants.
