  • Artwork Description

    Six skiers hang suspended on a chairlift against a deliberately featureless background, adrift in a pale, almost lunar expanse. Some wear helmets, others favour oversized bubble hats. All are mid-conversation, gesturing and leaning into the collective fiction that work is somehow being done. The blank void behind them strips away context and lets the absurdity breathe - a boardroom with no walls, no agenda, and rather better views. Johny Midnight captures the universal comedy of ski-holiday professionals doing absolutely nothing productive.

  • Artist's Insight

    The title always made me laugh. I kept meeting people on chairlifts who insisted they were still working - taking calls, talking strategy. But there they all are, dangling in mid-air, chatting about nothing. I doubt much work was ever discussed. This painting is about that pretence - and the joy of quietly dropping it.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
