Boy and the Bubble

Boy and the Bubble

by Johny Midnight

A face emerges from a riot of abstract colour - a large translucent bubble at the centre may be a stomach full of turmoil, or something else entirely. Richly layered and deliberately open to interpretation.

  • Artwork Description

An explosion of colour fills the entire canvas - reds, teals, yellows, purples, blacks and greens colliding in dense, layered abstraction. From this chaos a face emerges in the upper portion, eyes closed, serene against the surrounding disorder. At the centre, a translucent bubble catches the light, a blue form visible within it. Stick-like legs dangle below. Johny's paintings in this mode invite the viewer to construct their own reading - here the bubble may be a stomach, the face its owner, the turmoil external or internal. The ambiguity is the work.

  • Artist's Insight

The circle was originally supposed to be a bubble. But when I added a face and some stick legs, I felt perhaps the bubble is now the character's stomach. These paintings are designed for you to make up your own mind - I don't want to tell you what it's about. But I do feel that perhaps his stomach is full of turmoil and he needs to let it all out to regain self-control. Then again, it might just be a boy with a very big bubble. You decide.
