  • Artwork Description

    The Brutonian bus service is painted with the clean, graphic confidence of a vintage travel poster - flat sky, strong silhouette, simplified palette. The vehicle itself is the painting's centrepiece: teal bodywork, cream upper deck, a red stripe, and the destination board reading simply BRUTON. Along its windows, impressions of passengers look out. To the right of the bus, a woman and a small child in a red coat wait with the patience of people who know the timetable. On the hilltop in the left background, the Bruton dovecote provides its customary punctuation. The whole painting has a screen-print quality, deliberate and affectionate.

  • Artist's Insight

    I have always loved vintage transport as a subject because it carries so much social history without being heavy about it. The Brutonian bus is very specifically of its place and time, and I wanted to paint it in a way that matched that character - stylised, a bit graphic, not trying to be a photograph. The mother and child waiting gave it a human moment. And of course the dovecote had to be in there. It is always in there.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
