Bruton High Street

Bruton High Street

by Johny Midnight

Looking down Bruton High Street on a cool day. The chapel building glows in pale stone. Two dogs have more personality than the people. Gothic windows hold turquoise and grey reflections.

  • Artwork Description

The composition looks down the street toward the chapel - now better known as one of the finest cafe-restaurants in Somerset - with the Bruton Museum sign visible in the mid-distance. The chapel's Gothic arched windows carry reflections of turquoise and grey that give the stone facade an unexpected depth. The figures on the street are handled loosely: people pausing, a conversation happening, dogs pulling ahead. Two of those dogs carry more presence than anyone else in the painting. The palette is pale and cool - pinks and whites for the stonework, soft greys for the road - catching that particular quality of Bruton light on a quiet weekday morning.

  • Artist's Insight

Bruton High Street has a very specific atmosphere that I wanted to get right - it is not a busy town, but it is not empty either. There is always something happening in an understated way. I have always thought the chapel building deserves to be painted more often, especially those windows. Once the dogs were in I stopped worrying about whether the scene was active enough. They carry the whole thing.
