  • Artwork Description

A line of Tour de France riders battles upward through one of the race's great mountain passes. The lead cyclists are rendered with energy and precision - some standing on the pedals, others grinding seated - while the peloton stretches back in stylised formation. The road is grey with vivid purple shadows cast by the effort, catching the light on the tarmac. Green Alpine slopes rise on either side; white-capped peaks fill the background. The sky is a soft mix of grey cloud and pale blue. An intensely physical painting - every brushstroke communicates effort.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted to paint the sheer effort that Tour de France riders put into these mountain stages - the ones that decide the entire race. The purple shadows on the road were what drew me to this moment. They give the tarmac life and light. Some riders are on the pedals, some are grinding through the gears, and you can almost feel the burning in their legs. It's stylistic - I'm not trying to capture a photograph - I'm trying to capture the feeling of what it's like to watch the Tour go past on one of those passes.
