  • Artwork Description

    A single rider descends a mountain trail cut along a rocky ridgeline, the landscape falling sharply away to his left. The painting has the confident, flattened palette of a vintage cycling magazine cover - crimson rock face, pink earth, deep navy shadow, a pale open sky. Certain parts of the figure blur with speed; the bike holds its course. Johny reduces the mountain landscape to bold, unmodulated planes of colour, creating a composition that reads simultaneously as fine art and graphic design. The result is exhilarating: danger, speed and pure visual pleasure.

  • Artist's Insight

    The idea for this painting was to make it feel like the cover of a 1920s cycling magazine - those bold, flat, graphic images that are completely different from photography. I was out on those Chamonix trails thinking about that aesthetic. One rider, one trail, a big drop to one side. The colours are not realistic - the rock is deep red, the shadows are sharp, the sky is flat. I blur parts of the figure deliberately to show movement. Danger, speed and fun, all in one picture.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
