Cherry on Top
Cherry on Top
by Johny Midnight
A grey, featureless male figure in a suit and blue tie stares out from a dark background, an oversized red cherry sitting where the top of his head should be. Magritte-adjacent and quietly unsettling.

Artwork Description
A male figure - rendered in grey, almost sculptural, wearing a white shirt and blue tie - faces the viewer directly from a near-black background. Where the top of his head should be, a hyper-real red cherry sits, its glossy surface and green stem rendered with exquisite care. Fine spiral lines overlay the figure like thought-traces or sound waves. Small pink fragments drift at the edges. The contrast between the photorealistic cherry and the abstracted figure is the painting's central tension - a surrealist gesture that Johny arrived at through intuition rather than plan.

Artist's Insight
This painting is what I call free thinking - no real agenda, led entirely by how the brushstrokes lay on the canvas. I thought I was being original until I realised Magritte had painted a similar style - the grey man in a bowler suit with an apple in front of his face. This is why it's so hard to come up with truly original ideas: somewhere in the depths of my mind I had absorbed other artists' work. The cherry arrived naturally. I didn't plan it. Sometimes that's when the best things happen.
