  • Artwork Description

The tree-lined avenue is rendered in a pointillist-inspired technique, with thousands of small marks forming dense autumn foliage in reds, yellows and warm ochres. Below, the pathway is composed of mosaic-like squares that guide the eye into the depth of the scene. In the foreground, a father walks hand in hand with his daughter while a younger sibling runs ahead toward scattered leaves. To the right, children search for conkers. An elderly woman sits on a bench with a younger companion. Cyclists pass through the middle ground; dog walkers and couples stroll beneath the canopy. The scene is lively but gentle - full without being chaotic - and deeply rooted in the seasonal rhythm of Tooting Bec Common.

  • Artist's Insight

Chestnut Avenue is one of those places where the whole community ends up in autumn. I wanted to paint the density of it - the way the trees almost close over the path, the light filtering through all those points of colour. The pointillist technique came from wanting to replicate that sensation of standing under a canopy of autumn leaves and looking up. Thousands of individual marks that, from a distance, become a whole season. The mosaic path below was my way of echoing that structure in the ground. Every figure in this painting is someone I've seen on that avenue.
