Col de Valorcine

Col de Valorcine

by Johny Midnight

One of the most beautiful valleys in the Mont Blanc region - painted in bad weather, by choice. Snow-laden fir trees, grey mist, and barely visible peaks. Valorcine at its most honest.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

This moody alpine landscape depicts Col de Valorcine in the Mont Blanc Massif with heavy weather rolling through the valley, muting colour and flattening depth. Only the faintest outlines of distant peaks break through the cloud. The foreground is dominated by snow-laden fir trees, branches bent under the weight of fresh snowfall. Johny uses a restrained palette - soft greys, charcoals, and pale blues - allowing texture and layering to do the work rather than colour or drama. There is no spectacle here; instead the painting breathes stillness, cold, and the hushed feeling of snow absorbing all sound. The landscape feels vast but intimate, like a place you would happily get lost in.

  • Artist's Insight

I have always loved Valorcine, but I find it too pretty in full sun. Blue skies and sharp contrasts do not tell the truth of this valley. In real life, Valorcine is often wrapped in cloud, its forests half-hidden, its peaks barely visible - and that is when I think it is at its best. This painting came from days spent skiing and walking through the area in poor weather, when visibility drops and your focus shifts to texture, sound, and movement rather than views. I enjoy painting those moments when the mountains do not show off - when they feel introspective, quiet, and slightly unforgiving. It is a landscape stripped back to mood rather than spectacle.
