Common People
Common People
by Johny Midnight
A joyful and panoramic explosion of life on Tooting and Wandsworth Commons - runners, cyclists, kite-flyers, ice cream vans, yoga poses and around two hundred figures captured in vibrant cartoony oil.

Artwork Description
The grass is almost invisible beneath the movement of people. Runners pass dog walkers, cyclists thread between families, children fly kites, kick footballs and climb trees. Cricket games unfold alongside Frisbee throws; yoga poses stretch next to headstands. Elderly ladies sit on benches feeding pigeons while an ice cream van serves queues of children. Kids build dens. Dogs chase balls. The painting is deliberately cartoony in style, exaggerating gesture and colour to heighten the sense of playful overload. Every character is distinct yet interconnected, forming a tapestry of community across one sprawling, sun-warmed afternoon. The viewer is invited to search the canvas - and perhaps find themselves within it.

Artist's Insight
This painting started during lockdown, when I noticed that despite the restrictions the Commons were more densely alive than I'd ever seen them. Everyone came out at once. I found that remarkable and slightly hilarious - so I painted it. The cartoony exaggeration was essential. It lets you compress hundreds of people and dozens of simultaneous stories into one image without it feeling chaotic. The idea was always that you search the canvas and find something personal - your routine, your dog, your kids. It's a portrait of Tooting and Wandsworth as community, not just as place.
