  • Artwork Description

The foreground is painted in broad, flat planes of cool blue, contrasting sharply with the rich warmth of the autumn canopy above. Scattered leaves anchor the seasonal setting across the ground. At the centre, adults stand in conversation, wrapped in coats and hats against the first chill, while two children engage in their own exchange nearby. The trees dominate the composition, built up in thick textured layers of gold, orange and deep red, their weight and density overhanging the figures below. Despite the abstraction in the ground plane, the emotional tone is intimate and observational - a moment paused rather than staged. It feels like belonging rather than spectacle.

  • Artist's Insight

There's a shift that happens when you become a parent and you start being part of the scenes you used to watch from the outside. I used to notice families gathering under the chestnut trees in autumn - the conkers on the ground, the parents catching up, the children in their own world. And then I became one of those parents, and suddenly I understood it differently. The flat blue foreground came from wanting to separate the ground from the trees - the trees are the point here, their texture and warmth. The children's conversation in the foreground is the heart of it for me.
