Deconstructed Power

by Johny Midnight

Battersea Power Station taken apart and reassembled on canvas - chimneys toppling, the Shard visible in the distance, people and trees scattered throughout. A mosaic of blues, purples and orange that reimagines the landmark as pure colour and energy.

  • Artwork Description

Rather than a conventional view, this composition fragments Battersea Power Station and rebuilds it through abstraction, colour and layered texture. The chimneys tilt and shift, almost toppling, the sky a mosaic of blues, purples and creams with a burst of light. The power station's brickwork emerges in bright flashes of orange and yellow. London monuments - including the Shard - appear in the background, placing Battersea within its wider city context. Trees and figures are scattered throughout, thrown into the composition abstractly. The result is energetic and modern — the building dismantled and reconstructed through movement, colour and instinct.

  • Artist's Insight

I was thinking about apple crumble - how something familiar can be broken apart and rearranged and still taste like itself. I wanted to do the same with Battersea. All the right brushstrokes, just not in the right order. The chimneys feel like they're falling, the London skyline bleeds in from behind, people and trees appear without permission. It's playful and slightly anarchic — which felt right for a building that has itself been completely dismantled and put back together. The Shard in the background grounds it in modern London even when everything else is coming apart.
