Artwork Description
This painting follows the sunlit path along Tooting Bec Common past the much-loved café, where daily life unfolds in multiple registers at once. Fluorescent greens saturate the grass and trees, giving the landscape an almost electric vitality. To the right, children splash in the notorious puddle that never drains. At the café tables, regulars sit with coffees while feeding their dogs. A couple reclines on the grass with their baby; yoga stretches unfold in the foreground. A woman in a zebra-print dress walks her Scotty dog past a runner who narrowly avoids an over-curious black Labrador. Above, the sky is constructed from mosaic-like squares of blue, mauve and white, adding structure and rhythm to the scene's openness.

Artist's Insight
The café on Tooting Bec Common is one of those places that holds everything together. On any given afternoon you'll find yoga, dogs, babies, puddle splashing and people who've clearly been there for two hours without noticing. I amplified the greens deliberately - they're not naturalistic, they're emotional. The mosaic sky came from wanting to impose some structure on what is essentially organised chaos. The zebra-print dress, the near-miss with the Labrador - those are real things I saw. The painting is about the fact that all of this is happening simultaneously, every single day.
