Donkey
Donkey
by Johny Midnight
Painted on the French island of Ile de Re, where donkeys roam the fields and sanctuaries. Applied with spoons and credit cards - the paint feels as if it arrived rather than was painted by human hands.
Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

Artwork Description
Painted after a summer camping on the Ile de Re, where donkeys wandered the fields and sanctuaries with unhurried ease. The technique is unconventional - paint applied with the back of a spoon and credit cards rather than brushes, creating a surface that feels discovered rather than made. The donkey's coat is built from deep indigo, luminous turquoise and warm copper; the background has a silver, shimmery finish that makes the animal seem almost to glow. The eye is the final element and the painting's quiet centre - soft, dark and entirely present.

Artist's Insight
I camped on the French island of Ile de Re that summer and there were many donkeys - wandering around the fields or in sanctuaries. I handled the paint with the back of a spoon and credit cards, not really using brushes. I wanted the painting to feel as if it had arrived and not been painted by a human. Once again, the eye was the most important part of the painting - capturing softness and beauty. The background has a silver shimmery finish and the donkey is almost luminescent with turquoises and deep indigos.
