Dragon Fly

Dragon Fly

A large dragonfly rests on a pale, almost bare surface - wings translucent blue, body dark and jewelled. Four black ants approach from different angles. Minimal, precise and quietly theatrical.

  • Artwork Description

A dragonfly lies spread-winged on a pale, washed surface - its body dark and iridescent, compound eyes catching red and purple, the wing-veins rendered with careful precision. The wings are translucent blue, patterned, almost delicate against the spare ground. Four black ants move across the same surface at different distances - one close, three further away - their scale making the dragonfly enormous, or the world very flat. The background is a near-empty grey-white with faint abstract marks. The composition is part scientific illustration, part still life, part something quietly darker.

  • Artist's Insight

I've always been fascinated by insects - the engineering of them, the colour, the strangeness up close. A dragonfly is genuinely extraordinary if you look at it properly. I wanted to paint it large, with real care, and then add the ants because they change the whole reading of the image. Are they curious? Predatory? Just passing? The near-empty background gives it a slightly unsettling quality - like a specimen, or a dream. It's a painting that makes people look longer than they expect to.
