  • Artwork Description

This painting follows the arc of Electric Avenue through the heart of Brixton, the Victorian buildings curving into the distance beneath a clear blue sky. Striped and solid canopies in reds, greens and yellows create a vivid rhythm above the shopfronts, while the buildings themselves are rendered in warm pastels - soft pinks, muted greys and brick reds. Figures fill the street throughout: shoppers pausing at stalls, parents with pushchairs, children weaving between adults, neighbours mid-conversation. Rendered in Johny's expressive, slightly stylised manner, the characters are simplified yet full of personality, conveying movement and atmosphere without rigid detail. It is celebratory, warm and unmistakably Brixton.

  • Artist's Insight

Brixton has an energy that's hard to describe but easy to feel the moment you're on Electric Avenue. The arc of the street creates this natural stage, and I wanted to paint the people who fill it - the stallholders, the shoppers, the kids in pushchairs. I wasn't trying to document the street so much as capture its mood: the warmth of the awnings, the mix of cultures, the sense that everyone belongs there. Brixton has always had colour and character, and this painting was my way of celebrating both.
