End of Summer

End of Summer

by Johny Midnight

A storm rolls in from the left while the right-hand sky still holds its summer pink. Below, rust-red trees rise above shallow pools of rainwater on open, unworked grassland - the season about to turn.

  • Artwork Description

Two weather systems share one canvas. On the left, dense grey rain falls in something close to realism; on the right, the sky lifts into soft lilac and pink. The land between is worked in broad greens that flatten towards a low horizon, broken by a scatter of small trees already carrying autumn rust. Shallow floodwater holds the sky's reflection at the centre. Close to, the surface reveals thousands of fine scratches drawn through the paint - a technique that scatters light across the greens and keeps the scene from settling into photography.

  • Artist's Insight

I wanted the weather doing two things at once - the front coming in hard on the left, the last of the summer still holding on the right. The title comes from the trees. They are just about to turn, and once they do the whole palette changes. Up close you will see thousands of scratches through the paint. It works a bit like pointillism in feel, softening everything, keeping it from looking like a photograph. And the water in the middle is not a lake. It is a very big puddle.
