  • Artwork Description

    Accessible only via the Aiguille du Midi at 3,850 metres, the Vallée Blanche is the most spectacular one-day ski descent in the world. This painting captures the moment just before it begins - four figures traversing the exposed ridge above the glacier, their scale dwarfed by the immensity of the terrain below. Thick, textured oil sweeps across the fractured ice of the Mer de Glace foreground, while the Alps dissolve into a fading sky of cold, crystalline blue. Human presence feels fragile here. That is entirely the point.

  • Artist's Insight

    I've skied the Vallée Blanche many times - always with my eyes wide open, always avoiding crevasses, always operating like a camera lens trying to capture somewhere that only the Chamonix mountain goat should really be. I wanted the scale to be felt, not just seen. So I viewed this from a helicopter. The ridge is even more exposed than you imagine from below.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
