Fab Bee

Fab Bee

by Johny Midnight

A bee blown up a hundred times over, hovering above a patterned summer field of flowers - and eyeing, you suspect, a Fab lolly rather than any bloom. Realism and abstraction working the same canvas.

Limited edition fine art prints, hand-signed and numbered by the artist. Once the edition is sold out, it will not be reproduced.

  • Artwork Description

A single bee, magnified enormously, holds the centre of the canvas in careful realistic detail, its body and wings closely observed. Around it the background turns abstract and patterned, all summer colour and suggested flowers, so exact rendering and free mark-making share the surface. Part of the Fab series in spirit, it is bright, warm and faintly comic - a hyper-real insect set loose in a decorative, sun-struck field.

  • Artist's Insight

This is probably best described as realism and abstraction at once. The background is very abstract, full of patterns hinting at summer and flowers, while the bee itself I have kept as realistic as I can - though it is maybe a hundred times life size. Given the choice, I suspect this particular bee would hunt down a Fab lolly long before any flower. It was about having fun and showing off both techniques together.
