  • Artwork Description

    A single Fab lolly stands centre-canvas against two flat fields of light and dark blue, the split background pushing the red and white of the lolly forward. The rendering is deliberately clean and graphic, closer to pop art than still life, with the sprinkles worked up into small three-dimensional beads. It is a simple, confident image that turns a piece of childhood nostalgia into something bold enough to carry a cover.

  • Artist's Insight

    I was asked to paint a cover for Time and Leisure's summer edition, and the only thing I really wanted to paint was my favourite lolly. I didn't expect much of it as a painting - just something that would work on a cover. The blue background was about making the red pop and the white look frozen, and I spent longer than I should have making the sprinkles look edible. It started a whole series in the end.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham.
