  • Artwork Description

    Painted in a warm, slightly cartoon-like style, this chairlift scene captures the gentle comedy of a family ski day. Snow falls steadily as the chair climbs. Each figure inhabits their own moment: one child leans over the edge sneaking a look at the drop; another stares straight ahead; a third leans into conversation with the adult beside them. Turquoise sky presses in from above, and snow-dusted fir trees peek through the mist below. The falling snow softens everything without quietening it.

  • Artist's Insight

    Chairlifts force people to pause. You're stuck together, often with the people you love, unable to go anywhere for five minutes. This painting is about that pause - the chatter, the nerves, the checking of the drop, and the simple joy of being in the mountains together. It could be any resort. I wanted it to feel instantly familiar.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
