  • Artwork Description

    A pelican drops through the frame mid-dive, rendered with realistic precision against a loosely abstract background of sea and sky. The composition catches the bird at its most controlled, all folded intent, the antithesis of its awkward life on land. Cool marine tones surround a sharply observed subject, and the contrast between exact bird and painterly surroundings gives the image its lift and speed.

  • Artist's Insight

    This goes back to my Caribbean days, when I would spend hours - not waste them, study them - watching the diving pelicans. On land these creatures are hopeless, all big paddling feet and cumbersome bodies. But the moment they take to the air and start to fish, they remind me of fighter pilots. So I painted the bird realistically and let the background go abstract around it, to keep all the attention on the dive.

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham.
