  • Artwork Description

    A central orb of yellow and amber burns outward through arcs of crimson, orange and deep charcoal in Johny's most intensely physical canvas. The surface is dense and textured - paint applied with force and conviction. Look closely and hidden creatures emerge from the chaos: a seahorse, an octopus, an elephant. The composition suggests both cosmic event and earthly eruption, a fireball caught at the moment of impact. This is a painting that rewards patience as much as it demands attention.

  • Artist's Insight

    I wanted this to feel genuinely hot. The paint went on fast and thick - I was thinking about a meteorite, that moment of collision and light. But I also hid things in there, animals people don't always notice at first. It felt right that a painting about raw energy should have living things inside it. The BBC used it in The Split, which still makes me smile - it's not the quietest piece to have on a wall.

About the Artist

Johny is a painter and founder of Gallery Midnight in Balham. His work is often described as “abstract on reality”, capturing familiar landscapes, seascapes and city scenes with expressive colour and movement. Influenced by a life spent between London, the Alps and the Caribbean, his paintings explore changing light, atmosphere and energy, inviting viewers to see well-known places in new and unexpected ways.
